Overview
Computer engineers design and develop hardware and software embedded in any modern system or product you can think of. Communication networks, data acquisition systems, smart transportation systems, microgrid interfaces, home appliances – almost everything built today includes computer parts, and so computer engineers are needed for their design.
At The University of Akron, computer engineering students gain a strong foundation in programming, operating systems and computer systems, similar to computer science students. They also study differential equations, physics, circuits, and analog and digital electronics alongside electrical engineering students. This suits them to understand both the computing issues and the physical issues inherent in a system design. For example, in the design of a self-driving vehicle, our graduates would be ready to face issues of computer security and machine learning, as well as those of sensing and feedback.

Career Outcomes
Computer engineering covers areas like operating systems, embedded systems design, digital circuits, algorithms, software design and computer architecture. Applications include wired and wireless networks, simulation, automation, digital control, sensing, robotics, app designs and data management.

Our engineering students learn through experience. Our famed co-op program, one of the oldest in the country, provides students with paid industry experience. On average, students earn $47K over three co-op rotations, all while completing their degree. Within six months of graduation, our 2024 College graduates launched careers, pursued graduate school, or entered military service, with an average starting salary of $72K.
