Overview

While engineers focus on innovation, technologists focus on applying those ideas in the real world. Mechanical engineering technologists play a key role in industries like aerospace, automotive, manufacturing and consumer goods by making sure products work properly and processes run efficiently.

In The University of Akron’s Mechanical Engineering Technology program, you’ll learn engineering fundamentals that prepare you to operate machines, test products and improve manufacturing systems. A degree from UA gives you the skills to design, test, build and maintain the mechanical components and systems used across many industries.

The mission of the program is to provide high-quality educational opportunities that help a diverse group of students reach their career goals in mechanical engineering technology.

Admissions Requirements

  • Students who meet The University of Akron’s admission requirements and choose engineering as their major are directly admitted into the College

  • If you're coming from high school, your high school records will help determine the best first-semester courses for you

Career Outcomes

Mechanical engineering technologists and technicians often work on design teams, in manufacturing operations or in research and development labs.

Recent UA graduates with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering Technology have started careers in design, manufacturing, service, sales and testing. They work at companies like Bridgestone, Goodyear, Hendrickson, Honda, Parker Hannifin, Schaeffler and Swagelok.

Accreditation

The BS in Mechanical Engineering Technology program is accredited by the Engineering Technology Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Mechanical Engineering Technology and Similarly Named Programs. The program has specific educational objectives and student outcomes that prepare graduates to enter the professional practice of engineering.

Students on co-op

Learn Through Experience

Our engineering students learn through experience. Our famed co-op program, one of the oldest in the country, provides students with paid industry experience. On average, students earn $47K over three co-op rotations, all while completing their degree. Within six months of graduation, our 2024 College graduates launched careers, pursued graduate school, or entered military service, with an average starting salary of $72K.

SIM Project

Undergraduate Research

Undergraduate research opportunities and senior capstone projects empower students to innovate, apply classroom knowledge, and strengthen collaboration skills in professional settings.
