Overview

Mechanical engineers are needed across many industries, working on everything from small components to large plants, machinery and vehicles. They research, design, build and test mechanical and thermal devices.

At The University of Akron, our Mechanical Engineering program teaches you the core principles of thermofluids, structures and motion, and control systems. You’ll learn how to apply engineering, science and math to solve complex problems and create real-world solutions, processes and products.

Admissions Requirements

  • Students who meet The University of Akron’s admission requirements and choose engineering as their major are directly admitted into the College

  • If you're coming from high school, your high school records will help determine the best first-semester courses for you

Career Outcomes

Mechanical engineers play key roles in industries like automotive, aerospace, energy, petroleum, manufacturing, electronics, chemical and consulting. They typically work in offices but may visit worksites when their expertise is needed to solve a problem or assess equipment. Successful mechanical engineers are technically minded, have strong problem-solving skills and can apply scientific and numerical knowledge effectively.

Graduates with a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from The University of Akron have gone on to work at top companies including Goodyear, Bridgestone, GPD Group, Honda, Parker Hannifin, Northrop Grumman, RoviSys, Schaeffler Group, Stanley Black & Decker, Energy Harbor and Timken.

Accreditation

The BS in Mechanical Engineering program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET, under the General Criteria and Program Criteria for Mechanical and Similarly Named Engineering Programs Program Criteria. The program has specific educational objectives and student outcomes that prepare graduates to enter the professional practice of engineering.
