Overview
The English Minor enhances any major by building skills in literature, language, rhetoric, and creative writing. Students sharpen their critical thinking, writing, and cultural awareness through engaging courses and supportive faculty. Whether pursuing law, journalism, publishing, or technical writing, students gain a lasting appreciation for the power of language and storytelling—skills that stand out in any career.
Admissions Requirements
Students must achieve an overall GPA of at least 2.0 to earn the minor.
If a student desires a minor from the same department/school as their major, there is a college requirement for a minimum of nine (9) non-overlapping credits between the minor and the major, as well as between the minor and other minor programs in the department/school.

The University of Akron offers practical experience for students to submit and showcase their writing.
The Ashbelt: The University of Akron's student-run literary journal exclusively features the creative work of University undergraduates.
Upstart Crows: The Literary Guild sponsors a reading group and a writing group, dubbed The Upstart Crows, which hosts “open mic” poetry nights, travels to see plays performed in Akron and Cleveland, and engages in a variety of other intellectual and social activities throughout the year.
