Overview

The Biomedical Engineering Technology (BMET) Program at The University of Akron prepares students to apply engineering and technology principles to healthcare. Biomedical engineering technologists and technicians play a vital role in the daily operation of hospitals, clinics, and medical equipment companies by installing, calibrating, maintaining, and repairing essential medical devices, as well as performing routine safety checks to ensure reliable patient care.

Our modern, two-year associate degree program provides a strong foundation in medical instrumentation, bioelectronics, programming and software, equipment diagnosis and repair, report writing, and public safety. Students gain extensive hands-on experience using industry-standard tools and technologies that reinforce classroom learning.

The program is designed to prepare graduates to enter the healthcare industry with the interdisciplinary knowledge and technical skills needed for success and to pursue certification as a Certified Biomedical Equipment Technician (CBET).

With the continued growth of the healthcare industry, demand for skilled biomedical engineering technologists and technicians remains strong in Ohio and nationwide. UA’s Biomedical Engineering Technology Program positions future graduates for rewarding careers with hospitals, clinics, medical device manufacturers, and third-party service providers. Typical employers in this field include Abbott, Becton Dickinson, Cleveland Clinic, Dräger, GE Healthcare, Medtronic, Philips and Summa Health.

Learn Through Experience

Our engineering students learn through experience. Our famed co-op program, one of the oldest in the country, provides students with paid industry experience. On average, students earn $47K over three co-op rotations, all while completing their degree. Within six months of graduation, our 2024 College graduates launched careers, pursued graduate school, or entered military service, with an average starting salary of $72K.
