Overview
The Computer Information Systems (CIS) minor in Software Development gives you knowledge and hands-on skills in software development and database management. You'll start with basic computing concepts and build practical skills needed in today’s workforce. Courses are taught in advanced computer labs, and flexible day and evening class options help fit your schedule.
Admissions Requirements
Students who meet The University of Akron’s admission requirements and choose engineering as their major are directly admitted into the College
If you're coming from high school, your high school records will help determine the best first-semester courses for you
Students must pass a Computer Literacy Placement test before taking any required Computer Information Systems core courses or complete the bridge course CISS 105 Introduction to Computers and Application Software with a grade of C- or better prior to enrolling in the technical courses for this program. This class does not count towards program requirements.
Students must attain a C- or better in each transferred course in the CIS area.
Career Outcomes
Graduates work as cybersecurity analysts, security analysts, IT systems or network administrators, web developers and database administrators. They are employed by companies such as Cisco Systems, Diebold Nixdorf, FirstEnergy Corp., Google, Hyland Software, Progressive Insurance Company, Cleveland Clinic, Cleveland Cavaliers, Health Care Service Corporation, Union Home Mortgage and The J.M. Smucker Co.

On average, students earn $47K over three co-op rotations, all while completing their degree. Within six months of graduation, our 2024 College graduates launched careers, pursued graduate school, or entered military service, with an average starting salary of $72K.
