The Department of Biology is a vibrant, hands-on hub for students exploring life sciences at every level, from cells to ecosystems.
With two undergraduate degrees, a master's program, and a Ph.D. in Integrated Bioscience, we offer more than 75 biology courses spanning neurobiology, physiology, microbiology, ecology, and more.
Many of our classes include labs and field components, with summer courses offered in Virginia Beach, Maine, and the Bahamas. Our faculty, experts in everything from spider webs to plant-animal interactions, guide students through meaningful research experiences and immersive learning that prepares them for success in science, medicine, and beyond

Biomedical Science, B.S.
The Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Science is tailored for students pursuing a health-related career or a career in biomedical research. With a strong focus on human biology and disease, the program prepares students for a variety of professional health pathways, including medical, dental, and pharmacy school.

The Bachelor of Science in Biology provides a broad foundation in the life sciences, emphasizing hands-on lab and field experiences.
Biology, M.S.
The Master of Science in Biology offers advanced training in research, data analysis, and scientific communication. Students choose a thesis or non-thesis track, gaining expertise for careers in education, research, or professional health programs.
Integrated Bioscience, Ph.D.
The Integrated Bioscience Ph.D. is an interdisciplinary program that bridges biology with chemistry, engineering, and other fields. Students engage in innovative, collaborative research to solve complex biological problems and prepare for leadership roles in academia, industry, or public service.
Biological Sciences Graduate Certificate for Educators
The Department of Biology at the University of Akron is offering a new pathway for AYA science teachers, either with a Master’s degree or in the process of earning a master’s degree, seeking the necessary credentials to become eligible to teach CCP Biology courses at their high schools.
