Favorite Suggestions for Student Teachers
- Teach to the corners of your room.
- Watch the use of "you guys," "you know," "okay," and "like."
- For class activities, give clear instructions, criteria for successful completion, and regular time prompts.
- Don't turn your back on the class.
- Don't talk while the students are talking. Wait until they are quiet and attending before giving any instructions.
- Remember to use wait time.
- Don't distribute materials until you have given an explanation of how they will be used.
- Provide visual prompting to support your instruction.
- Find a way for the students to restate or review the objectives at the end of every lesson.
- Circulate, circulate, circulate!
- Aim for 100% participation in large group instruction (use strategies like show of hands, think/pair/share, use of whiteboards, exit tickets, role play, game-style reviews, creating graphic organizers, fishbowl, KWL charts, etc.)
