Callie Mack, Senior, Marketing, explains why global experiential learning opportunities were why she chose the College of Business Administration.
“On December 18, 2014, I realized that choosing to go to The University of Akron was the best decision I’ve ever made. I was in Haiti, on a student-led service trip with 15 students from different backgrounds, hometowns, and academic majors signed up to teach English, conduct service projects, and immerse themselves in a new culture.”
“At the end of the day, I wrote in my journal, ‘We took a second to reflect on how rare it is for 15 strangers to connect as well as we have in less than a week. I completely agree. Together, I believe that we can do incredible things; we are already a family, our roots are in Akron, and our hearts are in Haiti.’”
“In this moment, I knew wholeheartedly that I came to UA for a reason. The University has provided me the opportunity to engage in experiential learning. It has given me a new global perspective and challenged me as a leader and a person. Today, those 15 strangers have created a student organization and nonprofit on campus called Zips for Haiti. Our organization has grown to over 60 students, we have sent over 100 new students to Haiti, and are raising money to create a scholarship for a Haitian student to study at UA (zipsforhaiti.org).”
