President Scott Scarborough will deliver a major policy speech at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15, at The City Club of Cleveland. More than 100 years old, The City Club is nationally known as a forum for thought leaders to discuss issues and ideas that shape the region, the nation and the world. Previous speakers have included Franklin D. Roosevelt, Robert Kennedy, Rosa Parks, Archbishop Desmond Tutu and George W. Bush.
Scarborough’s appearance at The City Club was booked several months ago. “I am honored to use this opportunity to bring national attention to the advancements we are making in Akron at The University of Akron and in the region to improve access to excellence in public higher education. This is a unique forum in which to position our University for distinction.”
The president’s speech is a theme he has continued to develop and promote since arriving on campus last July: “More than Harvard: Building a Great Public University in Northeast Ohio.” From the description on The City Club of Cleveland website, the speech highlights “how and why a truly great public university must emerge in Northeast Ohio.” The nearly 30-minute speech will be followed by a half-hour unscripted question and answer session.
The event is sold-out, but there are many ways to hear what the president has to say:
- Watch the live webcast at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, May 15.
- Listen to the first half-hour live on FM 90.3 WCPN radio at 12:30 p.m.
- Watch the rebroadcast of the speech on Sunday, May 17, at 10 a.m. on television station WVIZ.
- Listen to the radio rebroadcast at 7 a.m. on WCPN on Sunday, May 17.
The president will also host a press briefing immediately after the speech, to address questions from the media. A copy of the speech will be posted on our website, along with other relevant information and videos.
