The University of Akron (UA) School of Law is partnering with Wilberforce University to establish an accelerated pathway for students to obtain both a bachelor‘s degree from Wilberforce and a Juris Doctor (J.D.) from Akron Law.

This partnership, which is commonly referred to as a three plus three (3+3) degree program, offers an exceptional educational opportunity for qualifying students. Participating students will benefit from this seamless, sequential pathway, graduating with both degrees in just six years instead of the usual seven. The benefits of this program include financial savings and accelerated entry into the workforce.

“This new partnership creates an affordable pathway to law school and a legal career for Wilberforce students,” said Akron Law Dean Emily Janoski-Haehlen. “As a school of opportunity, Akron Law wants to create as many opportunities for students to become lawyers as possible. We think taking away part of the financial barrier is a great place to start.”

Wilberforce becomes the ninth college to have a 3+3 program with Akron Law and the second historically Black college or university in Ohio to have a 3+3 partnership with any law school. Central State University and UA established a similar partnership in 2023.

"The importance of having Black lawyers in our society cannot be overstated,” said Wilberforce President Dr. Vann R. Newkirk. “Black attorneys bring essential cultural perspectives to the legal system and ensure representation from historically underserved and underrepresented communities. This partnership further ensures that our students are equipped to make meaningful contributions to the legal profession and to the fight for a more just society."

In addition to Wilberforce and Central State, Akron Law’s other 3+3 partners include Kent State University, Walsh University, the University of Mount Union, Indiana Tech University, Robert Morris University, Youngstown State University and UA, where students majoring in political science, history, philosophy, business law, economics and health care administration may also take advantage of the 3+3 program with Akron Law.

Wilberforce is located in Wilberforce, Ohio. It is the nation’s oldest private, historically Black university owned and operated by African Americans.

“The admissions team at Akron Law is thrilled to partner with Wilberforce on this exciting new 3+3 program,” said Akron Law Associate Dean for Enrollment Management Barbara DiGiacomo. “We can’t wait to meet with students from Wilberforce and mentor them as they prepare to apply to Akron Law and go through the application process.”
