Warm weather will usher in new season of construction projects

Warm weather will see construction projects get under way

Planning is progressing for our upcoming construction season on campus. A slate of state, local and donor-funded construction projects will be undertaken in the coming months.

Here are the scheduled projects that will soon continue or get under way:

Auburn Science and Engineering Center Façade Renovation – (State Capital Funded)

Construction is scheduled to resume in May on the project’s last phase. The work will focus on the external portions of the building and will entail tuck-pointing, brick shelf angle repair, and waterproofing on the west tower, south tower and plaza facades. Construction completion is expected by November 2018.

Campus Electrical Loop Infrastructure (State Capital Funded)

Work is scheduled to resume in May. The project, which required temporary electrical shutdowns of several buildings during the fall 2017 semester, will resume as follows:

• Monday, May 21, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Akron Engineering Research Center, Exchange Street and South residence halls will be offline. The building coordinators will provide information to the residents.
• Tuesday, May 22, through Wednesday, May 30, both Ayer and Crouse halls will experience limited-duration rolling-shutdowns. Updates will be provided to the occupants by each building’s coordinator.

Campus Hardscape (State Capital Funded)

The continuing effort to replace and rehabilitate deteriorated sidewalks, exterior stairways, etc., across campus will begin in May. The upcoming planned projects include the walks and stairs north of the Jean Hower Taber Student Union, among other locations. More details will be provided in upcoming editions of the Digest.

College of Business Administration – Professional Development Center (Donations and Locally Funded)

The College of Business Administration’s 12,000 square-foot addition and 2,300 square-foot renovation project is scheduled will begin in May. The addition and renovation will add labs, study and lounge spaces, a corporate classroom, a boardroom and office spaces. Construction is scheduled for completion in April 2019.

Esports (Locally Funded)

The construction planning for the Esports Initiative is well under way. The buildout within the Honors Complex, InfoCision Stadium and the Jean Hower Taber Student Union will be completed by fall semester.

Folk Hall Chiller (State Capital Funded)

Folk Hall, home to the School of Art, will have its mechanical system upgraded. A new chiller was ordered and is scheduled to be installed by August. The building will be without central air conditioning during the installation. Information will be provided by the building coordinator.

General Labs Renovations (State Capital Funded)

The general lab renovations will begin in July and are expected to be complete by August 2019.  A number of labs will benefit from the replacement of casework, furniture and other aesthetic improvements. The impacted labs are in Olson Research Center, Goodyear Polymer Center, and Auburn Science and Engineering Center. Information will be provided by the building coordinator.

Institute for Human Science and Culture (Donations Funded)

The Institute for Human Science and Culture will join the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology on the third and fourth floors of the Roadway Building, located at the intersection of College and Mill streets.  The institute’s space will include three large galleries, classroom support space, offices, workshop, conditioned archive and lab spaces. Construction is scheduled for completion in February 2019.

LeBron James Family Foundation I Promise Suite (Externally Funded)

The LeBron James Family Foundation I Promise Suite on the third floor of InfoCision Stadium will soon undergo its buildout. The space will become the new “home away from home” for the Foundation’s I Promise students. Construction is scheduled for completion in September.

Schrank Parking Deck (Locally Funded)

The Schrank Parking Deck will undergo repairs and preventative maintenance, beginning in May. The project will replace aging expansion joints and drains to stop the water seepage into Schrank Hall that has been occurring the last few years. Construction is scheduled for completion by August.

Polsky Exterior Façade Renovation (State Capital Funded)

The Polsky Exterior Façade Renovation project continues as tuck-pointing will be performed and parapet unit masonry and lintels will be replaced. Additionally, the South High Street canopy will be razed and rebuilt while new façade lighting will be installed to enhance illumination for pedestrians. Construction is scheduled for completion in September.

Center for History of Psychology (Donations Funded)

The exhibits for the National Museum of Psychology at the Cummings Center for the History of Psychology are being fabricated and are scheduled for installation in June. Look for information on the museum’s opening in the Digest.

Plasma Alliance Building (University Foundation and Grant Funded)

The Plasma Alliance Building at the corner of East Exchange and Brown streets is scheduled for abatement and razing in April and May, respectively. Site restoration is expected to be completed in May as well.
