Julie Schenkelberg, The University of Akron’s newest artist-in-residence, will join fine arts students to create a “fantastical” interior landscape in the Myers School of Art Emily Davis Gallery, 150 E. Exchange St, Akron.
Now based in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Cleveland native comes to UA as part of the Myers Residency Program. Schenkelberg will deliver a public lecture at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 31, at the Akron Art Museum, 1 South High St. On Feb. 1, she and the UA students will begin work on the project.
A free public reception will be held at the Myers School of Art on Thursday, Feb. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m., with a gallery talk by Schenkelberg at 6 p.m. Music will be provided music by local Akron band, St. Joan.
Evoking shared history
In her own art, Schenkelberg's early exposure to the decay and renewal of the rust-belt region is evident in her installations and sculpture. Her background in theatre and years of working in set production in New York and elsewhere also contribute to the material complexity and drama of her work. Densely layered with the meanings and associations inherent in found objects, such as broken cups, reclaimed building materials and vintage furniture, these fantastical interior landscapes evoke shared history and memories.
Schenkelberg's work has been exhibited at UNTITLED in Miami Beach, Fla., and the Asya Geisberg Gallery in New York, N.Y. She is currently the resident artist for one year with the curatorial group SiTE:LAB in Grand Rapids, Mich., and one of her installations is currently on view at The Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh, Pa.
Emily Davis Gallery hours are Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Saturday from noon to 4 p.m.
