Cupid can’t do it alone: UA offers couples a Valentine’s check-up

02/02/2015

Valentine’s Day flowers and chocolates last for just a short time, but the relationship they celebrate is meant to endure – if properly cared for.

That’s why the Clinic for Individual and Family Counseling at The University of Akron is offering a Valentine’s Day Couples Retreat. For $35 – the price of a dozen roses – couples in committed relationships may register to attend the program, 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 14, at the clinic, 27 S. Forge St., Akron.

Couples will complete an online questionnaire before the retreat to help therapists assess their relationships in eight areas including communication, financial management, affection and sex, and conflict resolution.

Growth and goal-setting

The retreat opens with a group session in which presenters will talk about the main issues raised in the online questionnaires. After lunch, couples will meet individually with therapists, receiving feedback on strengths in their relationship, examining areas in which they can grow and setting goals.

This is the first time the counseling clinic has offered a Valentine’s Day couples retreat to the public. Couples must register by Feb. 12 in order to complete the online questionnaire. Call 330-972-6822. Cash, check or credit card accepted.

UA’s Clinic for Individual and Family Counseling, offering mental health services to the community since 1986, is part of the School of Counseling training program in the College of Health Professions.
