Latest Grant to the CBA Will Help Recruit Students to Growing Profession

A new grant from The Spencer Educational Foundation will help The University of Akron’s College of Business Administration recruit students into its new Risk Management and Insurance (RMI) program, which officially launched in the Fall of 2017. The new bachelor’s program prepares students to enter the rapidly growing industry of Risk Management and Insurance, teaching them how to identify, analyze, and manage financial and operational risks that are inherent in both personal and business settings.

The grant was announced in November, just 5 months after The Spencer Educational Foundation provided The College of Business Administration $4,000 to support a “Risk Manager in Residence” program and provide funds for the new Gamma Beta Chapter of Gamma Iota Sigma, the International Fraternity for Risk Management, Insurance, and Actuarial Science Students.

“The continued support from organizations like the Spencer Educational Foundation shows the ongoing need for university-level education in the risk management and insurance fields,” stated Dr. Jill Bisco, Assistant Professor of Finance in The College of Business Administration. “Through this support, we will be able to grow and expand our program over the coming years.”

This latest funding from The Spencer Educational Foundation comes in the form of a $47,710.00 grant, which will be distributed over the next two years, beginning in 2018. The funds will assist with costs associated with promoting and recruiting into the new RMI programs and supporting student meetings and organizations.

The RMI industry is expected to grow rapidly over the next decade, with an anticipated need for approximately 29,000 new professionals in Ohio alone through 2024.
