This initiative, led by the Greater Akron Chamber, is one of 12 award recipients nationally. The University of Akron will receive $7.1 million from this grant to support various initiatives aimed at advancing sustainable polymer technologies. These funds are designated to drive innovation, create high-quality jobs and strengthen the United States' economic competitiveness and national security.

“We are thrilled to be part of this significant federal investment in sustainable polymer technologies,” said Dr. Suzanne B. Bausch, vice president of research and business engagement and president of the UA Research Foundation. “The $7.1 million allocated to The University of Akron will enable us and our partners in higher education and the community to initiate new educational content in sustainability, develop a certificate and credential program in life-cycle assessment, and provide funding for K-12 summer camps, tuition incentives and assistance to reduce financial barriers.”

The Polymer Industry Cluster's funding is matched by approximately $7 million in partner investments, which will be used to foster innovation, growth and investment in the sustainable polymers sector. This initiative will create a strategic advantage for the U.S. while driving job creation and economic growth in the region.

The Tech Hubs Program was authorized by the bipartisan CHIPS and Science Act, which was signed into law in August 2022. The program aims to drive economic development and technological innovation across the United States, ensuring long-term sustainable growth and competitiveness.
