On Veterans Day, we celebrate and honor those who have served in wars and in our nation’s military. The freedoms we enjoy in our country today are due to the service that veterans have performed in the past.
We recognize the bravery of our Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine and Coast Guard veterans, and we appreciate the example that veterans have set for us all. We see echoes of their service everywhere in our lives. My father served in World War II, an experience that he carried with him throughout his life in his commitment to education and community service.
Thank you to the University of Akron programs and offices that support our veterans on campus. We are proud to have here at UA programs such as the Military Services Center that provides comprehensive enrollment and referral services to new and returning veterans and their families; a chapter of the Student Veterans of America; our three veterans lounges that offer student-veterans a place to relax, study and enjoy the same camaraderie that they experienced while serving our country; UA Adult Focus, an academic support center for adult learners, including veterans; American Legion Post 808, which increases members’ engagement with the academic part of their college experience and their preparation for graduation and beyond; and other offices and support staff in ZipAssist, CareerServices, School of Law, Graduate School, Counseling & Testing Center, Student Recreation and Wellness Center, Office of Accessibility, and Transfer Student Services Center to name just a few.
I also want to recognize the families of all veterans, especially the families of our veteran students. The support and sacrifice of the families that stand behind veterans is vital to their success here.
To our veterans – and to those active-duty military members who continue to serve – thank you for your service and contributions to our nation.
Sincerely,
Gary L. Miller
