2026 Achievement Awards: College of Engineering and Polymer Science

Together, this year’s honorees reflect the college’s ongoing commitment to excellence in teaching, research, service and student success across all disciplines.

The University of Akron College of Engineering and Polymer Science has recognized its 2026 Achievement Award recipients, honoring faculty and staff whose excellence in teaching, research, service and student support continues to strengthen the college community.

“These awardees represent the very best of our college,” said Dr. Craig Menzemer, dean of the College of Engineering and Polymer Science. “Through their dedication to students, commitment to innovation and service to our mission, they elevate every aspect of what we do. Their impact is felt not only in our classrooms and laboratories, but across our community and industry partnerships.”

Congratulations to the following awardees:

Louis A. Hill Award

Dr. Nic Leipzig

Professor of Chemical, Biomolecular and Corrosion Engineering

Dr. Nic Leipzig, professor of chemical, biomolecular and corrosion engineering, has been named the 2026 recipient of the Louis A. Hill Award, which recognizes outstanding faculty achievement across research, teaching and service. Leipzig was recognized for his well-rounded contributions to the college, including a strong record of impactful teaching, extensive service and research excellence. The selection committee highlighted his commitment to student success, noting especially the meaningful mentorship reflected in student nominations.

Chemstress Teaching Award

Dr. Chen Ling

Associate Professor of Mechanical Engineering / Biomedical Engineering

Dr. Chen Ling, associate professor of mechanical engineering/biomedical engineering, has been selected as the 2026 recipient of the Chemstress Teaching Award, presented by students through Tau Beta Pi. Ling was honored for her engaging teaching style, innovative classroom approaches and commitment to student learning. Students praised her ability to connect course material to real-world applications while fostering collaboration, creativity and an inclusive classroom environment.

Outstanding Staff Award

Gail Tankersley

Academic Advisor, College of Engineering and Polymer Science

Gail Tankersley, academic advisor in the College of Engineering and Polymer Science, has received the 2026 Outstanding Staff Award in recognition of her long-standing dedication to student success. With more than two decades of service, Tankersley was recognized for her unwavering commitment to students, consistent advocacy and deep care for their academic and professional development. Colleagues and students alike highlighted her reliability, mentorship and tireless support of the college community.

Outstanding Service Award Fostering Student Success

Dr. Kevin Cavicchi

Professor of Polymer Engineering, School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering

Dr. Kevin Cavicchi, professor in the School of Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering, has received the 2026 Outstanding Service Award for Fostering Student Success. Cavicchi was recognized for his sustained efforts in student recruitment and engagement, particularly through K-12 outreach, community partnerships and leadership in launching the Bachelor of Science in Polymer Science and Polymer Engineering. He has also expanded programs connecting students and educators with hands-on research and industry experience.
