Dr. Ge “Christie” Zhang, professor of biomedical engineering at The University of Akron, has been elected to the College of Fellows of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE).

Election to the AIMBE College of Fellows is among the highest professional distinctions for medical and biological engineers. The organization’s membership represents the top two percent of engineers in these fields. Fellows are recognized for outstanding contributions to engineering and medicine research, practice or education, as well as for pioneering new and emerging technologies and advancing traditional areas of medical and biological engineering.

Zhang was nominated, reviewed and elected by peers and members of the College of Fellows “for outstanding contributions to tissue engineering through development of innovations using biomimicry for therapeutic delivery, cell sheet engineering, and microfluidics,” according to an announcement from AIMBE.

“Dr. Zhang’s induction into AIMBE is a testament to her impactful and innovative research at the intersection of engineering and medicine,” said Dr. Hossein Tavana, chair of the Department of Biomedical Engineering. “Her work in biomimicry and tissue engineering is advancing therapeutic approaches and elevating the reputation of our program on a national and international stage.”

A formal induction ceremony was held April 13 during the AIMBE Annual Event in Arlington, Va. Zhang was inducted alongside 175 colleagues comprising the AIMBE College of Fellows Class of 2026.

While most AIMBE fellows are based in the United States, the College of Fellows includes members from more than 35 countries. Fellows work across academia, industry, clinical practice and government.

AIMBE fellows are among the most distinguished professionals in the field, including Nobel Prize laureates and recipients of the Presidential Medal of Science and the Presidential Medal of Technology and Innovation. Many Fellows are also members of the National Academy of Engineering, the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences.
