The Summer Experience in Engineering Camp at The University of Akron continues its long-standing tradition of providing hands-on learning, exploration and early college exposure for high school students interested in engineering. The five-day camp is hosted by the College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS) and brings together faculty, staff and industry partners who contribute to its success.

Throughout the week, students participated in lectures, discussions, interactive sessions and company tours led by faculty and industry professionals representing multiple engineering disciplines. These experiences gave students insight into real-world engineering applications and how different fields contribute to solving complex challenges in society.

In addition to academic and industry exposure, students toured campus facilities and engaged in a variety of social and recreational activities, including bowling, billiards, rock climbing, basketball and pickleball. These opportunities allowed students to connect with peers, build friendships and experience college life in a supportive environment.

Together, the academic, experiential and social components created an engaging introduction to engineering and helped students explore potential academic and career pathways.

What Students Had to Say

Students reflected positively on their experiences throughout the week, highlighting both learning and engagement.

  • “It was cool and helped me decide what type of engineering I want to go into.”
  • “The tours were great. I enjoyed being able to visit companies that produce vital consumer goods.”
  • “This camp was a lot of fun. Even though it was only five days, it was an experience that helped me deepen my understanding of engineering and what engineers do.”
  • “Summer camp was a lot more fun than I was expecting. I got to learn more about engineering and the fields, as well as which ones I’m interested in, and made some friends too. I got to see UA as a bonus, starting my college search.”
  • “It was overall pretty fun and a nice overview of the different engineering fields.”
  • “We learned about all different types of engineering and how they benefit everyone.”
