UA receives award for support of employees in U.S. Reserve and National Guard

University of Akron (UA) President R.J. Nemer accepted on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the Seven Seals Award, which recognizes an organization’s significant achievement in support of employees who are members of U.S. Reserve and National Guard.
The Seven Seals Award is given by the Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve (ESGR), a program of the Department of Defense.
"What The University of Akron has done here is not the easy but the hard thing to do," ESGR Vice Chair Tim Garth said during the award ceremony. "Lots of employers meet the law, but The University of Akron, through the Military Services Center, has gone above and beyond. … We just want to say thank you."
ESGR volunteer Chaker Fadel ’62 ’72, who received his Air Force commission at UA, also spoke during the presentation. UA Board of Trustees Chair Michael J. Saxon attended the award ceremony and Mary Rossett, director of UA’s Military Services Center, accepted the award with Nemer.
"As an institution, we are proud of our Military Services Center and are champions of our ROTC cadets," Nemer said. "The University of Akron supports the National Guard and Reserve service members, and this award recognizes that fact."
Nemer also noted UA’s Counseling and Testing Center and the offices of accessibility, advising and student Pathways, and financial aid, for their support across the University.
In his nomination for UA to receive the award, Michael S. Richard, soldier and family readiness specialist for Family Programs J9 Resilience Directorate, said he could not think of a more deserving Military Services Center than the University’s.
"I communicate and coordinate with several colleges across the state regarding National Guard Soldiers and their education benefits. The University of Akron by far stands out as the top one I have worked with," he wrote. "Mary and her team truly care about the service members, which has been evident with their dedication to providing expert guidance with military benefits and fostering a military-friendly campus environment that has made a profound difference in many soldiers’ academic pursuits. The University of Akron Military Services Center’s commitment directly impacts the retention, readiness, and overall well-being of our Guard members. I have seen it over and over again."
