The University of Akron will soon be hosting the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) for our 2026 Midcycle Review. HLC conducts this review four years after an institution’s ten-year comprehensive evaluation, which UA underwent in 2022. The upcoming review, then, is an opportunity to show how the University continues to meet HLC’s accreditation standards, adhere to federal requirements, and strengthen the student learning experience.
The 10-year accreditation cycle is as follows:
A team of HLC peer reviewers will visit UA on September 14–15, 2026. During the visit, they will meet with members of the UA community, including students, faculty, staff, and university leaders.
The Midcycle Review gives UA a chance to highlight the work happening across the university and to reflect on where we can continue to improve. Faculty and students may be invited to participate in conversations, forums, or other activities connected to the review. More information will be shared regarding the visit will be shared via digest announcements.

CRITERION 1 - MISSION
The institution’s mission is clear and articulated publicly; it guides the institution’s operations.

In fulfilling its mission, the institution acts with integrity; its conduct is ethical and responsible.
CRITERION 3 - TEACHING AND LEARNING FOR STUDENT SUCCESS
The institution demonstrates responsibility for the quality of its educational programs, learning environments and support services, and it evaluates their effectiveness in fulfilling its mission. The rigor and quality of each educational program is consistent regardless of modality, location or other differentiating factors.
CRITERION 4 - SUSTAINABILITY: INSTITUTIONAL EFFECTIVENESS, RESOURCES AND PLANNING
The institution’s resources, structures, policies, procedures and planning enable it to fulfill its mission, improve the quality of its educational programs, and respond to future challenges and opportunities.
