Biography

Ronald F. Levant holds a B.A. in psychology (honors with great distinction) from the University of California, Berkeley; an Ed.D. in clinical psychology and public practice from Harvard University; an M.B.A. in general management (high honors) from Boston University; and a Doctor of Humane Letters (hon.) from Muhlenberg College. Dr. Levant has been one of the leading pioneers of the new field of the psychology of men.  He played a key role in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s in envisioning and developing this new field, serving as co-founder, co-chair, and the first President of the Society for the Psychological Study of Men and Masculinity (APA Division 51).  He co-edited A New Psychology of Men (Basic Books, 1995), which has been cited as “the most salient publication” in the new psychology of men (Cochrane, 2010, p. 45). Levant also served as Editor of the APA journal, Psychology of Men & Masculinity from 2007-2015, which had a 2015 Impact Factor of 2.947. Considered a foremost authority on the psychology of men and masculinity, Dr. Levant conducts research on men’s gender role strain, emotional expressivity, alexithymia, mental and physical health, fathering, violence, and masculinity ideology in multicultural perspective. He has authored, co-authored, edited, or co-edited 22 books, and over 300 refereed journal articles and book chapters. His most recent books are Levant, R. F., with Bowman, A. (2024). Fellow and 2005 president of the American Psychological Association, Dr. Levant has also served as president of its Division 43 (Family Psychology) and of the Massachusetts Psychological Association. He is a licensed psychologist and a double diplomate of the American Board of Professional Psychology (clinical and family psychology). His numerous awards include the 2021 William James Book Award, Division 1 (General Psychology) of APA, Co-awarded with Shana Pryor for their book, The Tough Standard: The Hard Truths about Masculinity and Violence, and the 2023 Lifetime Achievement Award, Ohio Psychological Association.
