Class details

Our blended-learning lifeguarding classes (for UA students only) are comprised of three class sessions over one week. If you are a full time UA student and want to work as a lifeguard for our department, we will waive all but $10 of the cost of the class pending successful completion of the course.

Online learning must be completed by the first day of class. All class sessions must be attended. Weekend class sessions take lunch and dinner breaks. Course materials will be provided to participants upon the successful completion of the pre-course skills evaluation held on the first day of class.

Course prerequisites

All participants must be at least 15 years of age on or before the last scheduled day of class and successfully pass the ARC pre-test as follows:

  • Swim 150 yards continuously using combined front crawl and breaststroke, tread water with legs only for 2 minutes, and then swim 50 more yards.
  • Swim 20 yards, retrieve a 10-pound brick from a depth of 10 feet, and swim with it, legs only, 20 yards back to the starting point within 1 minute and 40 seconds (1:40).

If the course pre-test cannot be completed, the participant will be dismissed from the course and refunded all but $10 of the registration fee.

Certification requirements

All participants must meet the following requirements:

  • Attend all class sessions. The class requires a strict attendance policy; refunds will not be provided for participants who fail to attend all class sessions.
  • Actively participate in all course activities, including assuming various roles during scenarios.
  • Demonstrate competency in all required skills.
  • Pass the final skills scenarios.
  • Successfully pass final written exams with a minimum score of 80%.

Participants who successfully complete the course will receive American Red Cross certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer, valid for 2 years.
