We are proud to boast one of the top sports officials’ development systems among collegiate intramural sports programs in the nation.
For many years, UA student officials have been recognized at both regional and national tournaments as some of the best in the country. Former employees in the program include division I college officials, numerous high school officials, and countless others that work in various youth and community recreation leagues.
Each year, selected Intramural Sports officials travel to extramural tournaments across the country. Over the past 10 years, student officials have represented The University of Akron at tournaments in Ohio, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Florida, North Carolina, Nebraska, Massachusetts, Georgia, Texas, Kentucky and Louisiana.

Join our team
We teach you everything you need to know to become a successful official. Our training program will provide you with the necessary knowledge, mechanics and communication skills to perform the job effectively. While previous officiating experience and/or a background in sports are helpful, neither are required.

Once hired, officials undergo extensive training sessions. Components include videotape review, guest speakers, rule interpretations, mechanics drills, station work, and actual field/court practical application of skills.
Student officials will be assigned games on a weekly basis according to their availability and demonstrated skills. Work schedules typically range from 10-20 hours per week.
