Biography

Dr. Mark McManus joined the faculty in the School of Social Work as a Senior lecturer in 2010, and worked as a Visiting Assistant Professor from 2014 to 2020. His current research interests are on social inclusion on the college campus and social relationships of individuals with intellectual disabilities. He was an invited participant in the National Goals in Research, Practice, and Policy working meeting in the domain of Social Inclusion in August, 2015. He was selected as the President of the Social Work Division of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities in 2016.

Prior to his work at the University of Akron, Dr. McManus practiced social work in Alaska with individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. He was based in Anchorage and traveled throughout the state working with Native Alaskans in remote villages. He then completed his Masters and PhD at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. There he worked to develop an online course in developmental disabilities in the School of Social Work. He also consulted with the Wisconsin Bureau of Developmental Disabilities, and the Wisconsin Council on Developmental Disabilities. He is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) in Wisconsin.
