Overview

The BFA dance major is designed for the student who wishes to pursue professional training in dance through an emphasis in ballet and modern dance techniques. This program offers extensive training in technical, performing, and choreographic skills and is supported by a core of coursework in dance history, pedagogy, and physical analysis. 

Admissions Requirements

Admission to the B.F.A. program is by audition only. Students begin as probationary dance majors and must:  

  • Complete one year of study with acceptable academic and artistic performance. 

  • Pass the Freshman Jury and Interview to transition into the B.A. in Dance program. 

  • Audition at the end of the sophomore year for acceptance into the B.F.A. 

Students must maintain a 2.875 GPA in dance coursework and meet progression requirements in ballet and other technique classes to continue in the program and graduate. 

Career Outcomes

The B.F.A in Dance prepares students for performing, graduate studies in performance and choreography, fields related to dance such as arts administration, dance history, physical therapy, dance therapy, dance education, or dance ethnology, as well as teaching in private studios.

Innovative Relationship with Joffrey Ballet School New York

The University of Akron and the Joffrey Ballet School partner to immerse students in both professional dance and university academics. New York campus dancers train with Joffrey faculty while earning an online B.F.A. in Dance from UA. The Joffrey Akron Intensive offers a summer program at UA that combines dance technique with academic enrichment. During the school year, Joffrey choreographers work with UA dancers on new pieces and training.
