Associate Degree in Nursing (ADN)

 All students who meet the minimum requirements for admittance into The University of Akron and intend to major in nursing are accepted into the College of Health and Human Sciences. The School of Nursing conducts a second review of candidates to ensure eligibility for continuation in the major.  

If you are coming directly from high school, your high school records determine which first semester classes are right for you. 

Students will begin the professional nursing sequence after pre-requisites have been met. This is a competitive program and during high application years, some eligible students may be placed on a waitlist.  

For our international students: 
If you are outside the USA at the time of your application, we regret that the ADN degree does not meet immigration regulations for a new F-1 student. As such, it is not open to international students in F-1 status who will be new to the USA at the start of their program. However, if you are an international student in F-1 status (or another visa status) who is inside the USA at time of application, please contact the International Center (Immigration@uakron.edu) so we can discuss your situation before you apply. 

 Prerequisites: 

The following courses are prerequisites to the professional nursing sequence. Students must maintain a 2.5 grade point average and earn no less than a C in the following courses:  

BIOL:200 Human Anatomy & Physiology I or ANAT:206 Applied Human Anatomy & Physiology I; 3 credits 

BIOL:201 Human Anatomy & Physiology Laboratory I or ANAT:210 Applied Human Anatomy & Physiology Lab I;  1 credit 

ENGL:111 English Composition I; 3 credits 

PSYC:100 Introduction to Psychology; 3 credits 

SOCIO:100 Introduction to Sociology; 3 credits 

Transfer students must meet this minimum grade point average using transfer credits from all previous institutions; students who have been academically dismissed from another institution's nursing program are not eligible for admission.  

Additionally, students will need the following to advance in the program:  

ONE of the following: 
Current STNA certification or;  
STNA skills evaluation or;   
Register for and attend the UA ADN Skill Boot Camp May 16, 17, & 18, 2025*, or; 
Complete a patient care assistant course approved by the director of the ADN program. 

 ONE of the following: 
Passing score on HESI (75% on Reading and Math exams) or; 
Minimum ACT score of 22 or SAT score of 1030 and GPA of any previous coursework 2.75.

TB Test 

Current BLS Certification for the Health Care Provider through the American Heart Association. 

*The UA ADN Skill Boot Camp does not result in the STNA license, however ensures that students meet progression requirements to start their clinical course work.
