ARI-AHEC Scholars Program

ARI-AHEC Scholars will:

  • Become a part of an interprofessional team.
  • Build relationships with other ARI-AHEC Scholars as well as AHEC Scholars from across NE Ohio.
  • Get specialized training, community experiences, and supports.
  • Get more in-depth information on topics like social determinants of health, health disparities, integrated care, and community issues like infant mortality and the opioid epidemic.
  • Work together to make a difference in the health of your community by developing and leading health and wellness programming for underserved populations in the Greater Akron community.

Benefits:

  • Receive a stipend of $1,000 per 80 hours (program year) for completing the required training and experiential hours.
  • Earn an AHEC Scholars certificate and identify yourself as an AHEC Scholar on your resume.
  • Build relationships with other ARI-AHEC Scholars and AHEC Scholars from across NE Ohio.
  • Receive mentoring and support from ARI-AHEC, UA, NEOMED and health professionals

*First consideration is given to students from groups underrepresented in health care professions

Information and Application

REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS

Each AHEC Scholar’s Program application should include:

  • Completed online application
  • Statement of 250 words or less, on how you will meet this challenge of an additional 80 hours of programming above your normal class load. Please include strategies that you will use to ensure your success.
  • Personal statement, not to exceed 250 words, that addresses your goals for participation in the program and any unique qualities that you can bring to the Scholar’s Program.
  • Explanation, not to exceed 500 words, of any previous experiences for interprofessional collaboration, service learning, health promotion or any other health education activities. Also include your thoughts to the commitment or experience with underserved individuals and/or communities.
  • Current college transcripts
  • Resume
  • Letter of recommendation from a teacher, faculty member or advisor.
