The Master of Taxation (MTax) Program provides intensive academic training for experienced accountant/attorneys and for individuals looking to enter the tax field.
Since 1979, The University of Akron MTax program has provided in-depth knowledge of tax law which can be immediately applied in practice. By providing knowledge and advanced research training, our program helps set you apart from the competition and prepares you for the next level in your career.
All MTax classes meet live and are designed for working professionals with evening meeting times. Our uniquely structured program can be completed 100% online, in person or a combination of both. Choose the structure that fits you.

- Tax planning and projects are a major focus for large and small businesses, driving high demand for expertise in this area. The MTax program provides analysis for both sides of transactions and thus our graduates have a significantly higher than average employment marketability.

- Graduates of the MTax program are highly recruited with over 90% placement rate before graduation. The MTax program provides the analytic tools and tax foundation to be successful in many career paths. Popular placement for our graduates include big four and super regional accounting firms, law firms, corporate, investment advisory, government agencies.
CURRICULUM
The integrated curriculum is designed for tax and legal professionals who will lead decisions for both businesses and individuals. Our 30-credit degree program offers foundational and elective courses. One key foundational course is Tax Research which provides an in-depth exposure to the sources of tax law as well as exercises for research and application to scenarios. Tax is an ever-changing field and this course provides the necessary foundations for your education and a successful career in tax. The program has eight required courses, and students choose two electives to complete the degree. Courses are delivered online and in-person on a rotating basis allowing you to choose which format best suits your learning preference and lifestyle.
Those without business or accounting background may be required to take an additional 3 to 6 credits of foundation courses to complete the program.
FACULTY
- Our faculty consist of full-time scholars and leading practitioners from big four accounting firms, national corporations, the Internal Revenue Service, and law firms. CERTIFICATES
The School of Accountancy also offers three tax certificates. These specialty certificates allow you to acquire advanced knowledge without pursuing a complete master’s degree. Specialized certificate areas include corporate tax strategies, high net-worth individual strategies, and specialized topics. The certificates are stackable towards the complete MTax degree.
SCHOOL OF ACCOUNTANCY
The George W. Daverio School of Accountancy at The University of Akron consists of faculty with a rich history of education and close relationships with the professional community.
Julianne Jones is Director and Professor of Practice for the School of Accountancy. She spent her professional career in public accounting specializing in high-net-worth individual planning and taxation. Since joining The University of Akron in 2013 she has taught undergraduate and graduate classes in accounting and taxation and was awarded the College of Business Teaching award in 2016 and the Beta Gamma Sigma Professor of the Year award in 2022.
