Institute for Human Science and Culture

Youngstown artist Jonathan Marafiote started painting in his early teens, inspired and helped along the way by his grandfather, a former firefighter. Marafiote No. 6 is a collection of oil paintings in honor of Jonathan’s grandfather. The collection features landscapes and seascapes both powerful and serene, which are displayed alongside personal objects representing Jonathan’s memories of his grandfather.

“My grandfather helped develop me into an artist at an early age. We would draw and paint together often. He didn’t have any art education, or any formal training in his life, yet he was the best artist that I’ve ever known,” says Jonathan. “What I enjoy most of all is what my paintings can mean to other people. What I can convey through a scene, or the meaning a piece can have for someone, for me, is the real beauty in my work.”

Artwork sale proceeds will go to the Youngstown Firefighters Charitable Organization, which donates coats for inner city school children. For purchases, contact artist at jmarafiote@yahoo.com.

About Jonathan Marafiote:

Headshot of Jonthan Marafiote“My name is Jonathan Marafiote and I am from Youngstown, Ohio. I graduated from Youngstown State University with a BFA in Graphic Design in 2001. Currently, I am a Director of Human Resources for XPO Logistics, where I have worked for the past 18 years. In my role I have built many relationships over the years and I get the opportunity to help a lot of people, in many parts of the country. It is very rewarding.

“With my background and love for art, I enjoy oil painting and logo design. Through my relationships and friendships that I have built, I am thankful to be able to be a part of local shows and get to display my work in various locations and businesses in the Youngstown area. I have also been able to help teach others to oil paint and feel that I can help anyone create a beautiful painting. I love to help others learn to paint, especially being able to help a child’s confidence grow in their painting skills.

“I have been married to my wonderful wife Kelly for 14 years and I have a son Giovanni who is 8 years old. They are the reason I work so hard. My grandfather, who was an artist, grew my love for art at a young age. As my grandfather did for me when I was young, I hope to encourage my son and niece and nephews in art and give them the confidence in themselves to be the best that they can be.”
