Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a bachelor’s degree.
- Complete the Ohio Alternative Resident Educator Licensure process and hold a valid Ohio Alternative Resident Educator License.
- Complete program requirements within the timeframe established by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce.
Program Format
The program is offered fully online to provide flexibility for working educators. Courses are available during fall, spring, and summer terms. Candidates may progress at their own pace while completing each course within the designated academic term. Most candidates complete the program within one calendar year.
Curriculum
The PDIAL curriculum includes coursework in:
- Student Development and Learning
- Teaching Methodology
- Classroom Management and Student Assessment
- Reading Foundations and Content-Area Literacy
- Curriculum and Instruction
- Phonics and the Structure of Language (when required)
Candidates must successfully complete all required coursework and maintain satisfactory academic performance to earn the Certificate of Completion.
Admissions Process
Applicants apply to the University of Akron as non-degree licensure students and submit:
- An application for admission
- Verification of alternative licensure status
- Documentation of IPTI or AREI completion
- Any additional materials required by the School of Education
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, allowing candidates to begin coursework during fall, spring, or summer semesters.

This program is designed to meet Ohio licensure requirements. Candidates seeking licensure in another state should consult the applicable state licensing agency to determine whether additional requirements apply.

Operation Teach
Operation Teach is a specialized, fully funded initiative designed to help current and former military personnel and their families transition into meaningful careers as licensed K–12 educators. The University of Akron has been awarded a grant by the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce as part of the Governor’s Ohio Military Veteran Educators Fellowship Pilot Program to support the initiative.
