Geology Field Camp
The University of Akron's Geology Field Camp is typically offered each summer in South Dakota & Wyoming. The five-week camp is broken into two 3-credit parts. Field Camp II is not offered every year, therefore, if you are interested, please contact Field Camp faculty.
Apply
Submit an application and an unofficial copy of your transcripts. If there is any available space after University of Akron students are enrolled then off campus students are admitted.
- Field Camp I - Late May until mid-June. The University of Akron course number is GEOL 453.
- Field Camp II - Mid-June until early July. The University of Akron course number is GEOL 454.
Details
Field camp places an emphasis on the collection, recording and interpretation of field data. We recognize that this will be the first major field course for many students and we aim to make all participants proficient and confident field geologists.
- Geology Field Camp I is intended for Junior or Senior students who have completed a Sedimentology class.
- Geology Field Camp II can be taken by students finishing their Junior or Senior years and students need to have completed Sedimentology and Structural Geology classes.
Locations & Housing
- Geology Field Camp I is located in the Black Hills, SD, (South Dakota School of Mines, Rapid City) and the Bighorn Basin, WY (Northwest College, Powell).
- Geology Field Camp II is located in Powell and at Rawlins south of the Seminoe Mountains, south-central WY. All graded exercises will be completed at these locations. We will spend approximately 6 days on field trips during GFC I & II.
Staff
Geology Field Camp courses are taught by faculty of the Department of Geosciences, The University of Akron. Student to instructor ratios are typically small but can vary from year to year.
