Fall 2025 Exhibit Reception

December 5, 2025 from 4:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Institute for Human Science and Culture | 73 S. College St. Akron, OH 44325

Join us for a free reception celebrating our newest exhibit, Home Free: Ohio Artists Envision Prison Abolition, along with three new student exhibits from the Myers School of Art.

Home Free features works by currently or formerly incarcerated artists, each with their own artistic voice and lived experience. Some offer critique and challenge us to confront our own limited narratives, while others depict the visual language of the carceral landscape. Home Free is a touring exhibit presented by the Returning Artists Guild, an abolitionist guild of directly impacted practicing artists across Ohio, and beyond.

Condemned to Life by Maura Ingraham explores the implications behind dissolving religious traditions surrounding death. Through Ingraham’s surrealist lens, animal symbolism and implied motion create narratives inspired by the artist’s poetry.

Eboné Roots Salon by Jyra Petite explores the texture, flow, and color of African American hair. The salon-inspired exhibit embraces the beauty of African American hair while critically examining its emotional and physical dynamics within society.

Synaesthetic is a site-specific installation created by Myers School of Art students, examining interactions between the senses, as well as between art and its location. How does location shape and respond to the art placed within it? How does place-specific art open dialog and layers of meaning?

Light refreshments will be offered during the event, and all attendees will receive free admission to the Institute galleries. Please RSVP by clicking the button below.
