M.S. in Applied Mathematics

This program is designed to train students in the formulation, analysis, and solution of mathematical models in a variety of application areas. It also emphasizes interdisciplinary research and teamwork. The program addresses the State and Regional needs for students with advanced training in interdisciplinary research, and prepares students for employment in government agencies, industry, financial sectors, K-12 education, college teaching, and advanced studies in doctoral programs.

Upon admission to the program, each student will undergo a review process to determine competency in undergraduate core mathematical areas and background in at least one junior-level or higher course in engineering or physics. If necessary, the appropriate course(s) will be added to the required course list for the student.

• Our master's programs prepare you for work in industry, government agencies, academia and for further graduate studies.
• Some of our recent graduates have gone to work at Bettis Atomic Power Laboratory, General Electric, American Greetings, Roadway, Infocision, Aircraft Braking Systems, Luke Engineering, Fairissac, Equity Engineering Group, Brown-Mackie, Los Alamos National Lab and Technigraphics

Admissions Requirements

Applicants to the program must meet the general admission requirements of The University of Akron School of Graduate Studies along with the following additional program-specific requirements:

• Applicants are expected to hold a BS degree in Mathematics, Applied Mathematics, or a closely related field with completed coursework in: Advanced Calculus / Real Analysis, Numerical Methods and / or Scientific Computation, and Ordinary Differential Equations. Students lacking coursework in a specific area will be considered for admission but may be asked to take bridge-up coursework; if they need significant bridge-up coursework they will start at UA as undergraduate guest students.

• Statement of purpose
