Dawn Johnson: Project Soar
Johnson Empower Lab
Project Description
Project SOAR is a funded research study by the Office for Violence Against Women, where we are developing and evaluating a culturally tailored, trauma-informed yoga program for Black and Brown women who have experienced intimate partner violence. We have completed focus groups with women with lived experiences and relevant providers, as well as an open trial with 9 women. We are currently recruiting for a pilot randomized clinical trial where we will compare SOAR to standard care. PREP students would be involved in recruitment, team meetings with community partners to discuss program feedback and troubleshoot recruitment, provide support for assessments and delivery of the yoga program (e.g., help with children of participants, collect forms and data) and will be offered the opportunity to be trained to conduct exit interview with women who complete the yoga program.
What Would You Learn?
The PREP student would learn about the intervention development process, grant-funded research, and randomized clinical trials by working closely with the two graduate assistants on the project. The PREP student will also learn about intimate partner violence and the healing impact of yoga. Especially motivated students who are willing to commit more time may have the opportunity to collaborate as co-authors on presentations of data from Project SOAR.
Commitment:
Commitment: We ask for a full semester commitment of 5 hours per week (translates to 2 credits of PSYC 497; Independent Reading & Research). This includes attendance at lab and project meetings. Students must have regular availability on Wednesday evenings, 6:30-7:45, which is when the yoga classes are offered. Also, we ask that students provide a 3-hour block each week where they are regularly available and can help with assessments, data entry, and support, or provide support to participants' children during research assessments.
