Department of Sociology Mission and Vision Statement

The Department of Sociology provides all students with the tools to engage, and the skills to solve, real-world problems including issues of health and well-being, social justice and inequalities. We collaborate across campus and with community members and organizations to develop students with strong analytic and communication skills who can think critically and act creatively to address social problems. By ensuring that all students apply their learning through hands-on research projects and a range of experiential learning opportunities, we graduate informed students who are prepared to work in areas designed to address systemic problems facing our local, regional and global communities and organizations.

What is Sociology?

Sociology is the scientific study of social life, social change, and the social causes and consequences of human behavior. As a sociologist, you will look beyond individual choices to understand the hidden structures that shape our lives—from the intimacy of family dynamics and global social movements to the impact of race, class, and gender in everyday interactions. By studying sociology, you don't just learn about the world; you develop the "sociological imagination," a unique analytical toolkit that connects personal experiences to broader public issues, allowing you to see the familiar in a completely new light.

Choosing a major or minor in sociology equips you with highly transferable skills that are invaluable in today’s rapidly changing job market. Our students graduate with deep expertise in critical thinking, research design, data analysis, and intercultural communication—skills that open doors to diverse careers in social policy, law, public health, marketing, criminal justice, and community advocacy. If you are curious about why society works the way it does and are driven to tackle the most pressing social challenges of our time, the Department of Sociology is your launchpad for a meaningful, impactful future.
