Bierce Writing Commons Policies
Appointments
Because Bierce Writing Commons can get very busy, you need to make an appointment to make sure a consultant is available at the time you need. You can schedule an appointment two ways:
-
Call Bierce Writing Commons at 330-972-6548.
- Stop by the Commons and make an appointment with one of the student assistants.
When you schedule your appointment, the student assistant will ask for your name, your phone number, and the course for which your writing assignment is due. Each session lasts 1/2 hour. ESL student appointments last one hour.
Walk-ins
You need an appointment to guarantee that a Bierce Writing Commons consultant will be available at a time that is convenient for you. If you come to the Commons without an appointment and a consultant is available, you will get assistance. However, it is best to schedule your appointment in advance to ensure that you can meet with someone when you need to. The Commons can get very busy, and if you walk in without an appointment, you might not be able to get the help you are looking for.
Number of Consulting Sessions per Week
You may have two sessions per week with a Bierce Commons Writing consultant. Each session is 30 minutes of one-on-one collaboration. For non-native English speakers, each session is 1 hour.
Appointment Cancellations
If you can’t make your scheduled appointment, please call Bierce Writing Commons as soon as possible to cancel and reschedule (330-972-6548).
No-shows
If you miss an appointment in Bierce Writing Commons without canceling it, you are recorded as a “no-show.” The Commons allows each student two no-shows per semester. If you miss more than two appointments, you may lose your privileges to visit the Commons for the rest of the semester.
Reports for Your Instructors
Some of your instructors will recommend that you visit Bierce Writing Commons. These instructors might request a report of what happened during your session. At the end of your meeting, the consultant can give you a form to take to your instructor. The form will indicate the date of your visit and the name of your consultant. It will also include a brief description of what you worked on during your appointment.
