First-Year Success Programs
The First-Year Success Programs in the College of Engineering and Polymer Science (CEPS) are designed to support all new students — whether you're studying engineering, engineering technology, computing or mathematics.
Through engaging courses and personalized guidance, you'll connect with faculty, advisers, peers and alumni starting in your first semester. You'll explore your major, learn how disciplines work together and build essential skills like critical thinking, communication, problem-solving and time management.
From day one, you’ll be part of a collaborative, inclusive community — ready to take on real-world challenges together.
Top 10 Tips for First-Year Success at CEPS
Start strong. Stay on track. Succeed big.
Participate in learning communities, student organizations, study groups and design teams. The friendships and professional connections you build can be just as valuable as what you learn in class.
Don't wait until you're struggling. Meet with professors during office hours, connect with peer support, tutors and reach out to advisers early. Successful students ask questions and seek support.
Start in the right math course. It's the language of STEM. A solid math base opens doors in every science and engineering subject.
Go to every class and lab. Being present means more than attendance. It's about asking questions, participating and showing you care.
Check Brightspace and email every day. Become familiar with Stellic and Workday. These tools help you stay organized, track degree progress and meet important deadlines.
Don't just copy slides. Write in your own words, sketch diagrams and highlight key ideas to better understand and remember concepts.
Review your notes regularly, practice solving problems and start assignments early. Success in STEM comes from consistent effort over time.
Map out study blocks, deadlines and exams. Use calendars or apps to avoid last-minute stress and keep life manageable.
Fuel your brain with sleep, nutrition and movement. A healthy body keeps your mind sharp and your energy steady.
Think ahead. Connect your classes to future careers. Attend career fairs, explore student organizations and take advantage of CEPS Co-op and Placement services to gain experience and build your professional network.
Learning Communities
Learning Communities (LCs) are one of the most impactful ways to support the success of first-year students. They help you build connections with peers, mentors and faculty members while giving you access to valuable resources for academic and personal development.
You will be invited to join one of six LCs:
- Computing and Electrical: Cybersecurity, Networking and Electrical Engineering
- Computing: Programming, Computer Science, Computer Engineering
- Engineering – Pathways to Success
- Engineering – Foundations in Motion
- Explore Engineering
- Engineering: Campus Connections
Zips: Engineered for Success
ZIPS: Engineered for Success (ZEFS) is an interactive program embedded in several first-year engineering courses, including Tools for Mechanical Engineering, Tools for Aerospace Engineering, Introduction to Biomedical Engineering, Tools for Electrical Engineering and Tools for Computer Engineering.
ZEFS is designed to help first-year students prepare for the rigors of the engineering curriculum by fostering meaningful connections within the UA community. Through weekly activities and teamwork with peers and mentors, students gain valuable lessons not typically covered in a traditional first-year course.
First-Year Festivities: Events to help you connect, grow and thrive
The First-Year Festivities Program is a yearlong series of fun, engaging events designed to help you make the most of your first year in engineering and computing.
