About the school
The School of Communication at The University of Akron is the home of strong undergraduate and Master’s programs. The school's distinction is that it houses the rich diversity of the field, specializing in Media Studies, Public Relations, Strategic and Organizational Communication, and Organizational Supervision. We teach students the central theoretical concepts of our profession as well as the practical skills of our craft. When students graduate from our program, they are ready to take their places as knowledgeable, well-trained communication specialists and critical media consumers.
In Kolbe Hall, students learn by doing. In the classrooms, they work closely with nationally recognized faculty members and professionals. In the media and computer labs, they work with cutting-edge technology to develop projects and products that have won regional and national recognition. In the student media, students broadcast to thousands of listeners and viewers every day on WZIP radio and on Z-TV; others cover the news for The Buchtelite newspaper in print and online. In professional organizations, students hone their skills through participating in PRSSA and the 2380 film festival. Students gain experiential learning though internship experiences with radio and TV stations, cable companies, newspapers and magazines, public relations agencies, non-profit agencies, training firms, sports organizations, new media groups and many more. As a result, students graduate ready and able to face the challenges of an evolving industry.
Students come to us for the big university advantage with a small school feel. Today we have more than 300 majors, with every one of them receiving individual attention and professional development.
