Charlotte Essner Women in Percussion Scholarship

The Charlotte Essner Scholarship for Percussion Students was established in March, 2010. Mrs. Essner is an associate professor emeritus of Speech Language Pathology and Audiology. She taught Speech Language Pathology at The University of Akron from 1965 until her retirement in 1982. Mrs. Essner also served as a member of the College of Fine and Applied Arts Advancement Council for many years.

Purpose/Requirements:
To provide financial assistance for a full-time percussion major in the School of Music who maintains a GPA of at least 3.0 and who also participates in the Steel Drum Band. First preference in awarding will be given to a female percussion student.

Qualify:
Recipients of the scholarship will be selected by the Director of Percussion Studies or a designee in coordination with the Office of Student Financial Assistance.

The scholarship may be awarded to the same student annually up to a maximum of five years as long as they remain a percussion major and maintain a 3.0 GPA or better.

Larry Snider Scholarship for Percussion

The Dr. Larry D. Snider Percussion Scholarship was established in 2019 by Dr. Larry D. Snider, distinguished professor of music and director of percussion studies at The University of Akron School of Music. Dr. Snider created the scholarship to demonstrate his support for UA’s percussion program, to which he has dedicated his career. Since joining UA in 1976, Dr. Snider has built a strong and widely respected percussion program whose graduates consistently achieve professional success as performers and educators throughout the world.

Purpose/Requirements:
To help ensure that talented, deserving UA percussion students have the funds they needed to continue or complete their education. UA students must be in good academic standing who play percussion in one or more music ensembles, whether enrolled full or part time, and who have financial need as identified by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Qualify:
First consideration will be given to percussion majors in performance or music education, then to students in other majors who play percussion in an ensemble. Selection will be made by the Office of Student Financial Aid.

Morgan Endowed Percussion Scholarship

The Stanley L. and Eloise M. Morgan Endowed Percussion Scholarship was created in honor of the Morgans by their daughter, Susan Morgan Martin, and grandson, Ronald H. Martin Jr.

Purpose/Requirements:
To provide a full-tuition scholarship (half tuition to an out-of-state student) to an outstanding freshman proficient on the mallet percussion, snare drum, and timpani entering The University of Akron as a percussion major.

Applicants must have a minimum 3.2 GPA from an accredited high school and have obtained a 22 on the ACT and must enroll in the BM or BME degree program. As a recipient of the scholarship award, the student is required to work two hours per week in the School of Music.

Qualify:
Recipients are selected upon recommendation from the School of Music's percussion faculty in conjunction with the Office of Financial Aid. The scholarship is renewable, providing the recipient maintains a 3.0 GPA each semester.

Snider/Pardee Endowed Fund for Percussion Scholarship

The Larry D. Snider/Caroline J. Pardee Endowed Fund for Percussion is established in memory of University benefactor Miss Caroline J. Pardee to honor Dr. Larry D. Snider, founder of The University of Akron Steel Drum Band. Dr. Snider’s thoughtful nurturing of Caroline Pardee enriched her life for many years, and Caroline’s love of the Steel Drum Band gave her great pleasure. She was the first benefactor of the Band and its students and was a regular contributor throughout her life.

Purpose/Requirements:
To support the Steel Drum Band Program of The University of Akron’s School of Music. Funds may be used for any purpose deemed appropriate by Dr. Snider, including student and faculty travel, equipment and music, compositions, guest artists, scholarships, and recruitment.

Qualify:
Determined by the faculty director of the Steel Drum Band.
