McClain, Dr. Shirla R., Collection

The Dr. Shirla R. McClain Collection includes the writings and research materials of Dr. McClain, a University of Akron alumna who was a public school educator and a Kent State University professor of education. McClain published over 45 academic papers during her career, but is still best known for her doctoral dissertation The Contributions of Blacks in Akron, 1825-1975, which was the first comprehensive history of Akron’s black community.

Kiwanis Club of Akron Records

Kiwanis International, founded in 1915, is a global community of clubs, members, and partners dedicated to improving the lives of children. The Kiwanis Club of Akron was founded in 1916 as the sixth Kiwanis Club in the world. The records document the club's history, its organization, financial information, membership, activities, and relationships to other organizations.


Jacobson, John and Betty, Papers

John M. Jacobson (1911-1992) and Betty Virginia (Heberlein) Jacobson (1917-2007) of Akron, Ohio owned and operated the John Jacobson Company, General Contractors. The couple were very active in numerous community organizations including the Akron Art Museum, Akron Civic Theater, Akron General Hospital, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens, Weathervane Theater, and The University of Akron. Their papers including correspondence, pamphlets, newspaper clippings, photographs, and negatives that document their life and work and numerous community organizations. 


Fort, W. Howard, Scrapbooks

W. Howard Fort (1915-2009) was a prominent Black attorney in Akron, Ohio who served on the boards of numerous local business and community organizations including The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company, Akron Area Chamber of Commerce, Urban League, and The University of Akron.  The W. Howard Fort Scrapbooks consist of 18 scrapbooks and one photograph album assembled by Fort that include newspaper clippings, photographs, documents, and ephemera that document his life and work.

Mr. Corbin (1901-1979) owned and founded City Chevrolet in Akron, one of the largest automobile dealerships in Ohio, and took part in many business and civic organizations. Citizens for a County Charter Records

The Citizens for a County Charter was a bi-partisan, twenty-five member committee formed in 1979 to draft a charter for Summit County, Ohio and place it on the November ballot that year. Known as Issue 2, it passed on November 6, 1979 and went into effect on January 1, 1981. The records include materials pertaining to various aspects of the 1979 campaign for the adoption of a Summit County Charter including proposals, publicity, campaign plans, and correspondence.

Bock, Fred C., Papers

Fred C. Bock was a graduate of The University of Akron who worked as a radio broadcaster and personality for WADC radio and as an advertising agent in Akron, Ohio. He later co-founded the Broadcasters Hall of Fame and became an inductee. His papers include items from his radio and advertising careers, documents from the founding of the Broadcasters Hall of Fame, and materials from his time as a student at The University of Akron.

Bluhm, Eileen E. Scrapbook

Eileen Bluhm was the Vice President of Communications at the Akron Regional Development Board from 1975 to 1995 and was considered one of Akron’s “chief civic boosters.”  She was involved in a number of local organizations including the Ohio Ballet, Akron Zoo, and the Akron Art Museum, to name  a few.  She was also a supporter of education and women’s rights. The scrapbook contains photographs, articles, awards, and newspaper clippings that document her life and work in the Akron area.

The Area Progress Board was formed in 1968 as a merger between the Area Develop Committee and the Citizens for Progress to promote the industrial and civic development of the Akron area. The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) is a non-partisan, non-profit organization founded in 1920 to defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country by the Constitution and laws of the

United States. Founded in 1950, the Akron Chapter was involved in several civil rights cases that caught national attention, including the desegregation of Akron public schools in the 1970s. The records document the national, Ohio, and Akron ACLU and include articles of incorporation, newsletters, correspondence, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, and membership information.


All-American Soap Box Derby Records

The All-American Soap Box Derby is a youth soap box car race started in Dayton, Ohio in 1934, but held annually in Akron, Ohio since 1935, except for a four-year hiatus during World War II.
