Wright, John Keightley, Colonial Theatre Scrapbook

John Keightley Wright (1938-2007) of Akron, Ohio was a local history and theater enthusiast and brother of Ruth Wright Clinefelter, long-time professor and librarian at The University of Akron. The scrapbook was amassed by Wright and includes newspaper clippings, theater programs, and ticket stubs of various theaters in Akron, Ohio, mostly the Colonial Theatre. 

Private Industry Council of Akron

The Private Industry Council (PIC) of Akron was formed in 1978 as an outgrowth of President Jimmy Carter’s Private Sector Initiative Program.  The records consist of correspondence, newspaper clippings, articles, booklets, pamphlets, reports, surveys, photographs, and advertisements relating to PIC activities, including job training and hiring programs and advertising campaigns to attract new businesses to Akron.

Ohio Canal Sesquicentennial Commission Records

The Ohio Sesquicentennial Commission was organized in 1977 as a subcommittee of the Western Reserve Historical Society. Its chief objective was to inform the public of the economic and historical significance of the Ohio Canal for the canal's 150th anniversary. The records include correspondence, fundraising materials, publications, and newspaper clippings that document the work of the commission during its two-year program.

Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Records, Photographic Prints and Negatives Series

The Photographic Prints and Negatives Series of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company Records consists of approximately half a million images that visually document the history of the company from 1912-1984.  The images depict a variety of topics including factory scenes and equipment, lighter-than-airships, parade balloons, employees, company farms and plantations, numerous rubber products, professional and amateur sports, automotive and motorcycle racing, advertising, aeronautics, women in the workplace, war-time production, and Goodyear’s extensive line of passenger, commercial, and other tires.  Formats include glass plate, nitrate, and acetate negatives in addition to black and white and color prints and slides.  All images from 1912-1951 have been digitized and are available on our Digital Collections Website.

General Tire and Rubber Company Records, Public Relations Series

The General Tire and Rubber Company was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1915.  It originally focused on truck and then automobile tires, but later branched into aerospace and defense, entertainment and broadcasting, chemicals/plastics, and industrial products.  Although Continental AG bought General Tire in 1987, it continues to develop, produce, and market tires for automotive applications.  The Public Relations Series consists of company publications, scrapbooks, advertisements, posters, calendars, and banners as well as photographs of foreign and domestic plants and installations, dealerships, and equipment.   It also consists of over a thousand motion picture films, videos, and sound recordings.

Flower, Robert D., Collection

Robert D. “Bob” Flower is a long-time resident of Stow, Ohio and member and trustee of the Stow Historical Society. His collection includes aerial photographs of Akron, a scrapbook of the Akron Naval Reserve, a map of Summit County, hard copies of the Akron Beacon Journal, and memorabilia from Polsky’s Department Store and Akron Central Hower High School.

Endres, Dr. Kathleen L. Collection

Dr. Kathleen L “Kitty” Endres is a distinguished professor emerita of Communications at The University of Akron. This collection is comprised of files and collected materials assembled and used by Dr. Endres during her career as a professor of Communications and Women’s Studies at The University of Akron.

Citizens for a County Charter Records

The Citizens for a County Charter was a bi-partisan, twenty-five member committee formed in 1979 to draft a charter for Summit County, Ohio and place it on the November ballot that year. Known as Issue 2, it passed on November 6, 1979 and went into effect on January 1, 1981. The records include materials pertaining to various aspects of the 1979 campaign for the adoption of a Summit County Charter including proposals, publicity, campaign plans, and correspondence.

Charles V. Blair (1933-2004) served in various roles at The University of Akron including Director of the News Bureau and Institute for Civic Education and Dean of the Evening College. His papers include correspondence, meeting minutes, financial statements, project proposals, progress reports, and newspaper clippings of the Summit County Greater Akron Community Action Council, the Akron-Summit Tutorial Program, and Upward Bound.

American Legion Post 209 Records

American Legion Post 209, also known as the “Wingfoot Post,” was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1919 by Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company employees returning from World War I. The records consist of meeting minutes, financial records, correspondence, photographs, membership lists, articles of incorporation, and constitutions and bylaws of the post. The records also include letters and photographs from Goodyear employees serving stateside and overseas during the First World War that were collected by Goodyear and later given to the post.

All-American Soap Box Derby Records

The All-American Soap Box Derby is a youth soap box car race started in Dayton, Ohio in 1934, but held annually in Akron, Ohio since 1935, except for a four-year hiatus during World War II. The records consist of correspondence from local races held in numerous states and several countries as well as subject files containing various financial records, administrative files, organizational documents, and a few photographs and ephemera.

Akron and Summit County Federation of Women's Clubs Records

Range: 1894 - 2010 Size: 7.0 Record Group: 99/93

The Akron and Summit County Federation of Women’s Clubs was organized in 1893 and united with the Ohio State Federation of Women’s Clubs in 1917. The group raised money for charity, hosted guest speakers, awarded scholarships, worked on various community-related projects, and lobbied for political reform. The records include notebooks, directories, scrapbooks, newsletters and subjects files that document the history of the group.
