Dr. Charles W. Wilson is an Emeritus Professor of Physics at The University of Akron (UA) and member of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). His papers include correspondence, publications, presentation notes, curriculum vitas, research notebooks, and syllabi. They also consist of materials collected by Wilson including publications of his colleagues at UA and annual reports, meeting minutes, and photographs from the Department of Physics and the Institute of Polymer Science as well as records relating to the AAUP. 

Talalay Foam Rubber Archives

Dr. Joseph Talalay and his sons, Leon and Anselm, were integral players in the history of rubber. They developed and perfected a process to make latex sponge rubber that was more sustainable than other processes. Much of their work occurred at the B.F. Goodrich Company in Akron, Ohio during the 1950s and '60s. The process was used by over 20 countries across the world and has continued to be used to create mattresses, pillows and other products comprised of foam rubber. The archive contains material relating to the Talalay Foam Rubber Process and the Talalay Family and includes agreements, correspondence, patents, products, processes, reports, foam rubber samples, and blueprints and photographs of plants and machinery.

Semon, Waldo L., Papers

Waldo L. Semon (1898-1999) was a renowned research chemist and eventually Director of Polymer Research at the B.F. Goodrich Company in Akron, Ohio. He obtained over 150 patents for his developments and improvements in the rubber and plastics industry including plasticized PVC known as Keroseal and styrene-butadiene synthetic rubber known as Ameripol. His papers include experiment notebooks, research notes, correspondence, and subject files relating to rubber research.

Resnik, Judith, Papers

Judith Resnik (1949-1986) of Akron, Ohio served as an engineer and astronaut with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) from 1978 until she died during the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger in 1986. Her papers include training manuals, technical materials, notes, photographs, schematics, memos, press kits, and briefings relating to manned space flight and her time with NASA.

The National Inventors Hall of Fame is a non-profit organization dedicated to inventors and their inventions. Formerly located in Akron, Ohio in a facility known as Inventure Place, the hall served as a science and technology museum and library, inventor’s workshop, and a national resource center for creativity. The records consist of board meeting minutes, records of CEO Richard Nichols, and information on inductions, programs, Inventor's Conferences, and construction of the hall.

Dr. Ralph Milkovich was a polymer scientist and polymer chemist and Professor of Polymer Science at The University of Akron. As a pioneer in the synthesis of pure block and graft polymers, he has over 40 patents and is cited on many others. The Dr. Ralph Milkovich Papers consist of information detailing Milkovich’s life and work and include resumes, CVs, obituaries, awards, patents, publications, organizational records, and collected material.

Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems Records

Lockheed Martin Tactical Defense Systems in Akron, Ohio was the successor of Goodyear Aerospace, a former subsidiary of The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company. The records mainly cover the development and manufacturing of airships and include photographs, photograph albums, and glass plate slides. Of special note are the factory construction logbooks and photographs depicting the assembly of the airships U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon.

Maynard L. Flickinger (1900-1990) of Barberton, Ohio was an M.I.T. graduate and an airship engineer for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company’s s Aeronautics Department, the Goodyear-Zeppelin Corporation, and the Goodyear Aircraft Corporation. His papers predominantly contain photographs and printed materials pertaining to airship design and airship travel, especially the U.S.S. Akron and the U.S.S. Macon.

Dr. James D. D'Ianni (1914-2007) was a noted rubber scientist from Akron, Ohio who worked for The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and is known for his contributions to the development of synthetic rubber during World War II. The collection contains materials relating to the development and usage of Alfin synthetic rubber by Dr. D'Ianni and Dr. Avery A Morton of M.I.T. and includes reports, graphs, tables, and correspondence.

Colley, Russell S.

Russell S. Colley (1899-1996) was a mechanical engineer at the B.F. Goodrich Company in Akron, Ohio and later the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). He is known as inventor or co-inventor of numerous products including the "Riv-nut" that allowed a single worker to affix rivets to airplane wings and the first aircraft de-icer. Dubbed the "First Tailor of the Space Age" and "Father of the Spacesuit," Colley is also known for the design and development of space suits, including those worn by daredevil pilot Wiley Post and the Mercury astronauts. His papers include photographs, patents, and printed materials documenting his life and work.
