Julian Suso was a faculty member at The University of Akron and Director of the Akron Department of Planning and Urban Renewal. His papers include reports, proposals, and correspondence regarding his career and the development of the Akron area.


Summit County Civilian Defense Council

Scrapbooks, radio scripts, and publications. Scrapbooks (six) on civilian defense activities , Books (four) with publications on child care, nutrition, statistics, and handbooks on jobs within the council (medical corps, firefighters, bomb squads, etc.). Framed "Citation for Merit" for the work done by members of the Defense Council.


Stux, Erica, Papers

Erica (Houser) Stux (1929-2018) was a chemist and writer from Akron, Ohio and Los Angeles, California who wrote poetry, prose, and humorous pieces for children and adults as well as songs and musicals. Her papers include her published and unpublished poetry and short stories, articles, books, sheet music, and CDs.

 


Stewart, Horace and Evelyn, Photograph Collection

Horace St. John Stewart and Evelyn Poole Stewart (later McNeil) were a husband-and-wife team of professional Black photographers who owned and operated Stewart’s Photo Studio on N. Howard Street in Akron, Ohio. Their photographs visually document the rich history of the Black community in Akron, northeast Ohio, and beyond, from 1897 to 1978. The collection consists of approximately 46,000 historic black and white and color photographic prints and negatives taken or collected by the Stewarts that capture Black personalities and families; religious, social, and cultural organizations; and civil rights.


Sierra Club, Portage Trail Group, Records

The Portage Trail Group of the Sierra Club was founded in Akron, Ohio in 1972. The group advocated for a number of local environmental causes including the creation the Cuyahoga Valley National Recreation Area. Today, it offers public education programs, lobbies for outdoor recreation, and offer scholarships for environmental education. The records include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, bylaws, histories, photographs, budgets, directories, newspaper clippings, maps, newsletters, publications, financial records, subject files and VHS tapes that document the history and work of the group. The records also contain some materials relating to the national organization.


Shoman, Edward C., Papers

Edward C. Shoman was the marketing manager of big tire sales at the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company in Akron, Ohio. His papers include business correspondence, reports, and personal notes from his 34 years at Goodyear in addition to numerous Goodyear related photographs, slides, video tapes, and published materials that mostly document Goodyear's off-the-road tires.

Semon, Waldo L., Papers

Waldo L. Semon (1898-1999) was a renowned research chemist and eventually Director of Polymer Research at the B.F. Goodrich Company in Akron, Ohio. He obtained over 150 patents for his developments and improvements in the rubber and plastics industry including plasticized PVC known as Keroseal and styrene-butadiene synthetic rubber known as Ameripol. His papers include experiment notebooks, research notes, correspondence, and subject files relating to rubber research.

Seiberling, Willard P., Papers

Willard Penfield Seiberling (1892-1981) was the son of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company co-founder F. A. Seiberling and his wife, Gertrude Penfield Seiberling. He was the first assistant manager and then manager of the Goodyear Aeronautics Department. He later served as a manager at the Seiberling Tire and Rubber Company and eventually became secretary and director. His papers include personal and business correspondence, drawings, photographs, negatives, blueprints, and legal documents regarding his business activities at both the Goodyear and Seiberling tire and rubber companies.

Seiberling, John F., Papers

John F. Seiberling, Jr. (1918-2008) was the grandson of Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company co-founder F.A. Seiberling and a Democratic congressman representing Ohio’s 14th Congressional District, based in Akron, Ohio. He helped establish the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and served on the House Judiciary Committee that held the impeachment hearings against President Richard Nixon. His papers document his congressional activities and include correspondence, legislation drafts, reports, newspaper clippings, artifacts, and materials relating to bills before Congress. Subjects include the Nixon impeachment hearings, Cuyahoga Valley National Park, Alaska lands, strip and surface mining, and public lands issues.

Sailor, Joseph, Letters

Range: 1862 - 1894 Size: 0.5 cubic feet Record Group: 99/82

Joseph Sailor (1824-1863), a tanner from DeGraff, Ohio, served as a private in Company E of the 45th Ohio Volunteer Infantry during the American Civil War. His letters primarily consist of correspondence to his wife and parents from 1862 to his death in 1863 and detail daily life of the Union soldier in camp, prosecution of the war in Kentucky, and medical practice during the Civil War. Also included are a newspaper account of Sailor's life and several letters describing politics in Civil War-era Ohio.

Collections are classified into the following broad categories:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections documents regional (mainly Akron and Summit County) history, and other designated collecting areas. Special Collections materials include personal and family papers and historical records of local governments, businesses, and civic and community organizations. Collection strengths are the history of the rubber and polymer industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
