WZIP-FM Records

WZIP (88.1 FM) is a non-commercial college radio station owned by The University of Akron that serves the Akron, Ohio metropolitan area. The station broadcasts a rhythmic contemporary hit radio format as well as news, sports talk, and public affairs in both analog and online formats. WZIP first began broadcasting as WAUP in 1962, but changed its call sign in 1989 to reflect the University’s mascot, the Zips. The records include correspondence, manuals, magazine and newspaper articles, and audio and program logs. 


Wright, W. Richard

Wright, John Keightley, Colonial Theatre Scrapbook

John Keightley Wright (1938-2007) of Akron, Ohio was a local history and theater enthusiast and brother of Ruth Wright Clinefelter, long-time professor and librarian at The University of Akron. The scrapbook was amassed by Wright and includes newspaper clippings, theater programs, and ticket stubs of various theaters in Akron, Ohio, mostly the Colonial Theatre. 


Works Progress Administration (WPA), Real Property Survey

The Works Progress Administration was the largest and most ambitious New Deal agency, employing millions of unemployed people during the Great Depression to carry out public works projects, including the construction of public buildings and roads and the survey of real property. The Works Progress Administration Real Property Surveys consist of 11 volumes of Real Property survey books (Project No. 9077) for Akron, Barberton, and Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio from February 15 to April 15, 1936.


Women’s Board to the Summit County Juvenile Court Records

The Women’s Board to the Summit County Juvenile Court was founded in 1958 by women representing various civic, social, and religious organizations in order to assist the court, its staff, and the youth in detention. The board promotes a sound program for children under the care of the Juvenile Court, promotes volunteer services, and raises funds that support programs and events that improve the lives of youth. The records include board meeting minutes, notes, memos, scrapbooks, photographs, and photograph albums. 


Wingard, Paul, Papers

Paul Wingard is a Republican politician from Stow, Ohio who served for two-years in the Ohio Legislature in the 1970s. His papers contain materials from his terms in the legislature including committee proceedings, legislation, and general correspondence.


Wilson, Dr. Gregory S., Rubber Workers Oral History Collection

The Dr. Gregory S. Wilson Rubber Workers Oral History Collection consists of seven oral histories conducted by students in his Oral History class at The University of Akron, which took place in Spring Semester 2014. The oral histories include digital audio recordings and transcripts of interviews with people who worked in various positions in Akron’s rubber industry, mostly at The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and Firestone Tire & Rubber Company.  This includes Dr. Charles Bell, Al Fitch, Don Heffner, Jim Hooks, Rick Houck, Dave Persons, and Mike Waugh. 


Wilson, Dr. Charles W., Papers

Dr. Charles W. Wilson is an Emeritus Professor of Physics at The University of Akron (UA) and member of the American Association of University Professors (AAUP). His papers include correspondence, publications, presentation notes, curriculum vitas, research notebooks, and syllabi. They also consist of materials collected by Wilson including publications of his colleagues at UA and annual reports, meeting minutes, and photographs from the Department of Physics and the Institute of Polymer Science as well as records relating to the AAUP. 


Wilson, Craig

Craig Wilson (1927-2007) was a journalist from Akron, Ohio who served as a reporter and editor of the Akron Beacon Journal for 40 years. He also free lanced stories to numerous national publications including Popular Mechanics, Antique Trader, and other special-interest publications. His collection includes materials from Wilson’s Akron Beacon Journal project that documents the lives of 40 people born in the Akron Area on July 4, 1976, the 200th anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, over a twenty-one year period.


WHLO Broadcast Recordings

WHLO (640 AM) is a commercial radio station licensed to Akron, Ohio that serves both the Akron and Canton metropolitan areas. Owned by Clear Channel Media and Entertainment, the station broadcasts primarily a news/talk format. The recordings consists of approximately 310 reel-to-reel tapes of broadcasts from the 1960s and ‘70s concerning local people, issues, and events. 


Whited, Charles, Manuscript and Oral History Interviews

Charles “Charlie” Whited (1929-1991) was a columnist for The Miami Herald for more than 25 years and was American newspaper publisher John S. Knight’s official biographer. The collection consists of a typescript of Whited’s biography of Knight in addition to various oral history interviews of Knight’s friends, family, and associations conducted by Whited in the 1980s during his research for the book.

White, Judge Harold F., Papers

Judge Harold F. White (1920-2014) was a graduate of The University of Akron (UA) School of Law (Class of 1952) and served on the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Northern District of Ohio for more than 41 years, from 1958 to 1999. He also served as adjunct professor in the School of Law at UA and received an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters from University. His papers include documents and newspaper clippings that document his life and work.

Minutes, newsletters, correspondence, committee records, publications, and news clippings of a west Akron neighborhood organization seeking to maintain a stable, integrated community.


Welton, Allen, Collection; Oak Hill Cheese Factory, Collection

Range: 1862 - 1876 Size: .25 cubic foot Record Group: 99/87

Allen Welton (1809-1878) of New York settled in Peninsula, Ohio in 1841 and became a prominent dairy farmer by building a successful cheese factory on his property, the Oak Hill Factory, the first in Summit County and one of the largest cheese producers in the area in the nineteenth century. Welton later opened the county’s second factory in Bath and helped the Western Reserve earn the nickname “Cheesedom” as he shipped his cheese throughout the Midwest and east coast of the United States and to the United Kingdom. The collection includes correspondence, postcards, circulars, receipts, and market reports pertaining to Welton and the Oak Hill Cheese Factory. The early correspondence relates to the American Civil War and Reconstruction era.

Weathervane Community Playhouse Records

Weathervane Community Playhouse is a non-profit community theater in Akron, Ohio that produces live theater performances and provides education and training in theater arts and appreciation. The records include membership lists, governance papers, newsletters, meeting minutes, scripts, publications, financial statements, programs, photographs, scrapbooks, slides, phonotapes, and newspaper clippings.


Waterhouse, Helen, Papers

Helen Waterhouse (1892-1965) was a journalist in Akron, Ohio who was considered “the most controversial newspaperwoman in Akron history." She wrote numerous articles and front page stories covering some of the most important topics of the day for the Akron Beacon Journal for almost 40 years. Her papers contain correspondence and a selection of her published articles, including her Russia Series, in addition to reports from the Ohio Newspaper Woman's Association and National Federation of Press Women.

Collections are classified into the following broad categories:

  • University Archives contain historical resources that document the history and development of The University of Akron and its predecessor institutions.
  • Special Collections documents regional (mainly Akron and Summit County) history, and other designated collecting areas. Special Collections materials include personal and family papers and historical records of local governments, businesses, and civic and community organizations. Collection strengths are the history of the rubber and polymer industry, lighter-than-air flight, and Ohio canals. Special collections also include local government records for a nine county region.
  • Book collections include rare books and books documenting the history of the university, the region, and special topics.  All cataloged books are included in the UA Libraries Catalog.
